Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ)

The MPQ, an instrument developed by Karen Van der Zee and Jan Pieter Van Oudenhoven, measures five key dimensions of intercultural effectiveness. These are personality characteristics which can facilitate or hinder intercultural adjustment. The dimensions are:

• Cultural Empathy
• Open-mindedness
• Flexibility
• Emotional Stability
• Social Initiative

There are English, Dutch, French, German and Italian versions of the instrument. So far it has been filled out by thousands of people. It is a reliable instrument and its predictive value is good. The questionnaire can be used for self-diagnosis, selection purposes, or evaluation of training programmes. The questionnaire can - on payment - be filled out online. Please contact: Van der Maesen Personnel Management. Different conditions apply for research purposes. For research applications please contact one of the authors.

Attachment Styles Questionnaire (ASQ)

Attachment styles are personality characteristics which are formed during interactions with significant others. They influence the way we approach others and in particular unfamiliar others. Therefore, attachment styles are also relevant in intercultural contacts. After all, those contacts concern contacts with unfamiliar others.

The ASQ, developed by Jan Pieter van Oudenhoven and Jacomijn Hofstra, measures four attachment styles:

1. The secure style: people with a secure style have a positive image of the self and they trust others. Social interactions are faced with confidence.

2. The dismissing style: people with this style are secure about themselves but avoid personal contacts with others.

3. The preoccupied style: preoccupied individuals strive for personal contacts with others but wonder whether they are friendly or interesting enough to others.

4. The fearful style: people with this style have a negative image of the self and they avoid personal contacts because they are afraid that they will be deceived when they get too close to others.

The ASQ can be obtained freely via the coordinator of the FEIC, Jacomijn Hofstra
